A brief history of Jakarta

This port city was originally called Sunda Kelapa, but on June 22, 1527 the prince Fatahillah conquered Sunda Kelapa and instead established the city of Jayakarta in the area. This date is then set as the date of the founding of the city of Jakarta. The city of Jayakarta develops as a busy port city, where traders from China, India, Arabia and Europe as well as from other countries exchange commodities.

In 1619, the Dutch Government (VOC) under the leadership of Jan Pieterszoon Coen occupied Jayakarta and immediately built a new city located west of the Ciliwung river, which he called Batavia, a name taken from “Batavieren”, the ancestor of the Dutch. Batavia was planned and built almost similar to the cities in the Netherlands, which were built in the form of blocks, each separated by a canal and protected by walls as a fortress, and a moat. Batavia was completed in 1650. The fortress-protected Batavia was home to Europeans, while the Chinese, Javanese and other natives were removed to other places. In its heyday Batavia was known as the ‘Jewel of the East’ and became the center of Dutch colonial rule which covered almost the entire East Indian Islands.

Then during the Japanese occupation in 1942, the name Batavia was changed to Jakarta, the name persisted until now.

Jakarta Culture and Art

The native population of Jakarta that we know today is the Betawi Tribe. This ethnic group was born from a mixture of various ethnic groups who had already lived in Jakarta, such as Sudanese, Javanese, Malays, Bugis, Balinese, Makassarese, Ambonese, and Chinese. From their hands was born a culture and a number of arts that are still preserved until now, the following of them.

Ondel-Ondel

Ondel-ondel is a show that is often displayed at various public parties. Ondel-ondel is a large doll whose height can reach 2.5 meters with a diameter of approximately 80 cm. Made from woven bamboo which is shaped like a human and assembled in such a way that is easily carried by the people who are in it. Ondel-ondel’s face is a mask of disguise. For the male, the face is painted red and the female is painted white with hair made from palm fibers.

You can find this show when there are events in the city of Jakarta or in several tourist attractions in Jakarta. Usually also found at wedding events. People often put ondel-ondel in the corner of the house, sometimes the ondel-ondel are also paraded around the village.

Sightseeing in JakartaOld cityIts existence cannot be separated from the assumption of the existence of mystical power in it. Before the arrival of Islam, people still believed that ondel-ondel had supernatural powers. On this basis, people include it in every traditional event and marriage as a protector from distress. Along with the times, the existence of ondel-ondel does not fade away, but instead it is preserved and become an icon of Jakarta culture.

Currently, ondel-ondel is displayed to accompany various events. Such as parading bride circumcision, office inauguration, cultural marches, and others. During its performance ondel-ondel is usually accompanied by the accompaniment of the music ningnong, tanjidor, xylophone kromong, pencak pencak, and tambourine ketimpring.

Tari Topeng Betawi

Besides ondel-ondel, there are still other interesting arts and cultures that is belong to Jakarta,  its existence is still preserved until today. It is “Tari Topeng Betawi” or Betawi mask dance which is a typical Betawi art. This dance is a combination of dance, music and theater.

Tari Topeng Betawi - JKT INDONESIAInitially, the Betawi Mask Dance was staged around by artists who were usually invited as performers of entertainment. Such as weddings, circumcision, cultural events, and so forth.

According to the Betawi community’s belief, this dance can keep away from disaster. However, along with changing times, these beliefs began to fade. Even so, this art does not necessarily go abandoned. Until now, we can still find it in several cultural events held in the tourist city of Jakarta.
