Until now it is still can not be ascertained when the temple was build and who’s command to build it, but strongly alleged that Prambanan temple was build around the middle of 9th century by the king Balitung Maha Sambu of Wangsa Sanjaya. The allegations is based on the contents of the Syiwagrha Inscription which was found around Prambanan temple complex and now preserved at the National Museum in Jakarta. The inscription referred to the date 778 Saka (around 856 AD) and was written during the reign of Rakai Pikatan.
Prambanan temple located in Prambanan Park, approximately 17 km to the east of Yogyakarta, precisely in Prambanan Village, Bokoharjo Sub district. Its location is only about 100m from Yogya-Solo highway, so it is not difficult to find it.
Ratu Boko is an archaeological building complex site located approximately 3 km in the south of Prambanan Temple complex, about 18 km east of Yogyakarta city. The Ratu Baka sites is situated on a hill at an altitude of 196 meters above sea level. The total area of the complex is about 25 ha. This site displays attributes as a place of activity or a residential site, but the exact function is not yet known clearly until now.
The name “Ratu Baka” comes from the legend of the local community. Ratu Baka (Javanese, literal meaning: “King of Stork”) is the father of Roro Jonggrang, which is also the name of the main temple at Prambanan Temple complex. This building complex is associated with local folklore about the story of Roro Jonggrang.
Ratu Boko was estimated have been used by people in the 8th century during the reign of Rakai Panangkaran king of Medang kingdom or Mataram Hindu of the House of Sailendra. From the pattern of the remaining buildings laying, allegedly this site was former king’s palace. This opinion is based on the fact that this complex is not a temple or a building with a religious purpose, but a fortified palace with evidence of the remains of fortified walls and dry trenches as a defense structure. The Remnants of settlements are also found around the site. This site is nominated to UNESCO to become a World Heritage Site since 1995.
