Ramayana ballet in Prambanan temple is a show that combines dance and drama without dialogue, based on the Ramayana story, it’s performed since 1961 near Prambanan Temple Yogyakarta.
Ramayana’s story is the journey of Rama in rescuing his wife Sita (usually called Sinta) who was kidnapped by the king of Alengka Kingdom, Rahwana. The stories based on Hindu epics adapted to Javanese culture make this Ramayana ballet show a unique dance performance.
More than 200 professional dancers and gamelan musicians participated in this Ramayana Ballet which took place on an open stage with Prambanan Temple as a backdrop. Ramayana Ballet is also based on the bas-relief at Shiva Temple, Prambanan.
The Ramayana Prambanan Ballet show is usually held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on 19:30 upto 21:30, the performances on the stage are open only in the dry season (May – October), in the rainy season (November – April) the performances are held on an indoor stage Trimurti.
